Ozempic Prices

A Worldwide View

GLP-1 agonists such as Ozempic could revolutionize healthcare and the cost of providing it. This class of drugs has been able to show promise in treating organ failure from heart disease to diabetes. In the US, however, the drugs are still too expensive to have a significant impact. With an annual treatment cost of about $12,000, it is not feasible to have broad adoption.

Fortunately, producing GLP-1s is cheap and in countries with different government purchasing regimes from the US, these drugs are available for about $2,500 a year. That price is significantly less than the ~$14,000 a year that the US spends per citizen on healthcare. - for a drug that addresses the country’s most deadly + costly diseases.

The cost of GLP-1s in other countries is a good benchmark for where prices will fall in the US when GLP-1s go generic. This is promising.
