PTSD & Trauma in Healthcare
War Zone
A literature review revealed that post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) rates among healthcare workers are approximately 20% on average - a similar level as seen in veterans who have participated in combat. More recent studies of healthcare workers in the post-COVID era show average levels of PTSD closer to 40%.
Healthcare providers deliver care to everyone who walks in the door, in every situation. Over the years, this means they have seen a lot and experienced a lot. The high stakes + high uncertainty in difficult situations combined with verbal as well as physical abuse at the hands of patients leads to a high prevalence of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among healthcare workers.
